Winter climb of Stob a'Choire Odhair

Climb of Stob a'Choire Odhair 30th January 2014. Wanted a simple climb for dog's first proper mountain and had already done Stob Ghabhar, so decided on this one. Deep snow from 1500 feet and no views out over Rannoch Moor at the summit. But she loved it.

  • Scotland so beautiful! 😍

  • If you’d put Olive’s name in the title, you’d go to 2 million views in a few days. And it wouldn’t be fibbing. “Young Olive Bests the Stob a’Choire Odhair”. Quite a nice show by the young pup!

  • Worth a break from your fine book to look this one up. First time in the snow was just as you described. What a wonderful memory to have on video! I wonder if Olive and Mabel take as long to dry out as a yellow Lab we used to know and dog sit. We always described his coat as being akin to a polar bear's. Once wet, it would take hours to fully dry.

  • Like others, I looked for this video as a result of reading the Olive/Mabel/Andrew book, and it was lovely to see Olive so excited at her first experience of snow 😊. My first dog also loved the snow, but sadly it was long before mobile 'phones with cameras, and so I have no videos of his pure joy at playing in the snow - other than in my memory. Living in Southern England at the time, snow was pretty rare - but I can still remember his initial (first experience) confusion at the changed environment, followed by riotous fun! He never understood why the snowballs I threw for him disappeared, when he 'grabbed' them in his mouth 😂.

  • Can you recommend a coat for labs, been trying to see what coat you put on Olive in this video. I like to do winter outings with my lab too, but the coat I got for Cooper is just ridiculous.

    Anton BundschuAnton Bundschuپیش 6 ماه
    • @mrandrewcotter Thanks for your reply. I am fairly new to dog owning, as we adopted Cooper (a 12 year old black lab) just two years ago. His youth is reborn when it is cold outside. Last summer he did his first 14er (peaks having elevation of 14,000 feet or 4,250 meters) here in Colorado. He did great and really thrived in the high cold air. However at that elevation anything can happen with the weather and I want to be prepared. If I die, he can (and probably would) eat me, but if he suffers even slightly, the emotional pain to me is worse than death. LOLs. So off I go to spend money on dog coats and rescue slings for dogs. Go see Fido Pro to see more ridiculous essential dog gear. My wife gave me your book for Christmas and I have been reading it to Cooper. He seems to enjoy it greatly, as do I.

      Anton BundschuAnton Bundschuپیش 5 ماه
    • I wouldn't bother with a coat for a healthy Lab unless it's -10 celsius or lower. They just don't need it - I didn't need to have Olive in a coat on this one. But both Olive and Mabel have Hurtta Extreme Warmer ones for when it is seriously cold up a mountain.

  • Came because of the mention in your book. LOVED seeing Olive's first experience with snow. Our lab Treble does NOT like the snow; however, I think this is due to his past. When we rescued him at 4 1/2 years old, the majority of his life he had been left in a closet with no window :(. We've had him five years now and he is the sweetest, happiest, craziest almost 10 year old puppy you've ever met. No one believes his age, even with the gray in his muzzle now. He was terrified of rain and snow when we brought him home. He is no longer afraid, but still only likes weather in the mid 70's and partly sunny with a light breeze. He adores his walks, but does not like any form of weather. I keep telling him he must have planned on being incarnated in San Diego, CA, not in New York ;). Treble wants me to let you know he still is hoping to meet Olive one day and convince her he is the man she's been waiting for. Not for breeding, but for snuggles. He's a total snuggle bug. Just realized Olive is wearing the same sweater as Treble does in the cold. Wish I could attach a picture for you.

  • I’m actually surprised Olive isn’t wearing those Ruffwear boots ? My son is in NYC and the snow hurts her paws ( salt on the snow mainly ?) he has had to train her to use her boots - it must be not so bad w the plain snow bc Olive is clearly running. Happily in circles .

  • Disagree about no views here. There's a view in every one of these climbs. None look simple to me. Fantastic. Olive became an old hand at climbing in no time. You're very lucky to be surrounded by such natural beauty. I was born and bred in NYC and surrounded by stuff like the Empire State Building, unnatural beauty located just a few blocks from where I lived. Climbs in buildings can be challenging. You need lots of experience going up and down in an elevator. Unless there's a blackout. Then suddenly everyone has a problem with things foreign to them. Like stairs.

  • Three things: first of all thank you very much for this video, it couldn't have come at a better time for this recently divorced bachelor dealing with the pandemic largely alone - I was nearly brought to tears remembering both my labs I had when still married whose lives were both cut short too soon, one we had to put down at seven months from a heart defect and my best buddy who died two weeks shy of his fifth birthday. Your scenes of walking Olive from the perspective of holding the leash really took me back to my wonderful memories of my short time with both my boys. I WILL someday own another Lab when I'm able to own my own home and he will have a proper yard - no vistas like that here in Southern Wisconsin. Second I'd like to say your country is gorgeous, maybe not to everyone's liking but it is too me - just stunning. I remember watching the James Bond movie Skyfall for the first time and when he goes home to Skyfall again the scenery blew me away, I sometimes feel like I've been to certain places I've seen pictures of but have never been to before physically - I can't explain it other than to jokingly say it was in another life. I definitely feel like I've been to Scotland before and would certainly love to be able to go in this lifetime! Lastly I must say to all the dog lovers out there if you haven't already read the book Merle's door" by Ted Kerasote PLEASE do! You will thank me later, I mean we're all having a little extra time on our hands these days - right?! Be well everyone, God bless

    • @Anu Joshi thank you for the kind words, I appreciate it. • @Darcy Jorgensen you're welcome, although for what I'm not sure😉 but I will say I wish you well, both in dealing with your divorce - I'm still struggling three years later but getting better - and also with your finding work. Trust in the Lord that he will help you through both of these difficulties in your life, and keep in mind that this period of your life is just that, a period or moment that you will someday look back on - you WILL get through this! Keep the faith Darcy and I will pray for you for a new job, I can relate since I just started a new job Monday after being unemployed for the last three months myself. Lastly I was hoping you could tell me what GSP means? All that wind, it might have been the Himalayas for all I could tell. Olive appears to be awed, and at the same time respectful of her surroundings. One lucky dog to be going on these excursions. I bet any time you go outside now, she gets all excited and wants to go with. Looks like she's in her element here. Anyway, I did look it up, and for some reason, Scotland does not come to mind when I think of places like this, so I learned something. Those last scenes were beautiful. I'm sitting here in Bismarck, North Dakota, with hardly a hill to be seen. :)

It's true, Australia is the oldest, flattest, and driest inhabited continent, but don't forget that Australia also has the Great Dividing Range ... stretching 3,500 kilometres, running the entire length of the eastern coastline fading out at the GRAMPIANS in western Victoria. Highest point being Mount Kosciuszko at the south eastern end at 2,228 metres high. Ben Nevis, 1,345 meters high, lies at the western end of the GRAMPIAN Mountains in the Scottish Highlands. Not trying to be a smart ass, just wanted to add some perspective, and link the name GRAMPIAN, which has an interesting etymology.
